Ekphrastic poem

The streets never get quiet enough
 Cars bolt about
Street lights buzz and hum
Hypnotizing the insects below

I watch people scream and shout
Blowing noise from their windows into
The sky and into innocent ears

  I don’t believe they realize
They never get quiet enough

Everyone on their phones and laptops
Distracted and lacking appreciation

 Wounded
 by our world
with all the pain and suffering
the anxiety and loss of self
  We are never quiet enough

 I see one man.
 Lacking shoes or proper dress
 Alone
Just quiet enough

So I reach down and place
 A small boombox
He doesn’t notice me
So I press play

Some Nights
You hear what
 is seemingly impossible
but only when your just
 quiet enough
